Borneo Jazz Festival 12th Edition

IT’S ALREADY BEEN WEEKS I AM STILL HAVING THE POST JAZZ WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOM

hey y’all! Have you been waiting for my blogpost on the recent Jazz Festival? Without further ado, LESGOH and read!

Last week I was invited for the second time covering 12th edition of Borneo Jazz Festival. I was stoked and feeling rather important somehow because this is an International event I was covering under the wings of Sarawak Bloggers Society.

I grew up listening to many kinds of music,my dad and my brothers are my biggest influence and I am grateful for that. My life revolves around music although I can’t play a single musical instruments. HAHA.

ENOUGH ABOUT ME, LETS TALK ABOUT BORNEO JAZZ.

Every year,Borneo Jazz has been doing some CSR Project in Miri, last year was tree planting (you can go to my last year’s blogpost) and this year was a bit different; we had Beach Cleaning at Luak Esplanade. Miri has been blessed with wonderful beaches, I always love to hang around the beaches sans the sandflies of course LOL. Nothing much to clean at the beach since it was on weekdays, probably we should go on the weekends, you can really see litters everywhere.

Charlie’s Angels must have pose.

MY TAKE ON THE PERFORMERS (MY FAVOURITES)

Since there were 12 performers this year, I am just going to highlight to you 3 of my FAVOURITES okay? Artistic Director Yeoh Jun Lin, has always been a maestro and I salute her for always bringing the best for Borneo Jazz year in year out. She has her eyes on every details about who will be performing, are the performers going to hype up the crowd? She is awesome in her field.

Zuhaili Zuhairi of ASWARA

This guy,had me glued at the press pit for a moment. His mesmerizing performance just blew me away. Doing some covers of the late P.Ramlee, he sure nailed it in his own way. I am truly proud to see young people getting interested in playing music and Borneo Jazz is an awesome platform for young performers like him and his bandmates to gain experience as well as having fun mingling with other international performers. Oh well of course I must have a selfie with Zuhairi ( I think he is scared of me bause I’m loud like that LOL)

Idang Rasjidi of  Indonesia

He is the GODFATHER of Jazz in Indonesia,he is the familiar faces of Java Jazz ( one of the famous Jazz Fest in Indonesia) During the press conference, I am moved to ask him one simple question;which is ” How has the youth in Indonesia embracing Jazz music?” His answer was simple, We need to tell the youth that Jazz is a good music. We (the musicians) have to reach out to the youth no matter where they are, especially in the KAMPUNG ( village). It has to be the musicians come to every place to play music and expose the jazz music. No wonder Indonesia has at least 64 Jazz events (yes 64 seriously).

He performed with Idang Rasjidi Syndicate, which his 2 sons were the drummer & the bassist and I must say, I was really blown away by their energy that night.

LAILA BIALI (Canada)

She is BEAUTIFUL IN PERSON! I Can’t help but to take selfies with her after the press conference.

img_6112
me,Alyssa & Laila
She performed Coldplay’s Yellow with a jazzy touch which was SUPERB and got me to sing along with her. Originally she wasn’t into Jazz genre because she was majoring in classical music that explain on the night she performed I still can hear her classical influence in few of her numbers.

Osaka Monaurail

The best is always the last! That is how Borneo Jazz Festival keep the crowd hype and the momentum going. This band is the bomb! They bring back the 60’s  James Brown vibe to the fest, heavy funk influence that makes the crowd wants more even before and during their performance it was slightly drizzling and windy.

MY PERSONAL THOUGHTS

Borneo Jazz Festival has always been the festival I always look forward to go. I hope that it will continue to be in Miri for many years to come. I always had fun working along with Sarawak Tourism Board and grateful for the opportunities given by them. Looking forward for next year!

Jazz is universal and humble, let’s make it that way. Forever and always.

Chef Desmond Chia’s Masterclass

Hello Readers! How have you been? I’ve been slacking off (not really) I’m busy most of the time working and work has been sucking the life out of me.

Oh well, lets get to the main topic (as seen on the header).

Last Thursday, Sarawak Bloggers (MYY Bloggers) was invited by Pullman Miri Waterfront Hotel for a special masterclass. Ladybird a.k.a Eileen texted me beforehand telling me that she passed my contact number to a guy name Joe something about food review at Pullman. When she mentioned FOOD, I AM IN!  (FOOD IS BAE Y’KNOW) Jokes aside, I said okay and Joe contacted me,I think he called me a few times until I finally answered. I WAS BUSY ALL DAY sorry Joe hahaha.

A little bit about Chef Desmond

He was born in 1976 in Bahau,Negeri Sembilan (Oghang Nogori nih). He had his humble journey and got a job in KL as a Dim Sum Chef. He joined various World Renowned Hotels mostly mastering in Asian Cuisine as in Dim Sum,Pull Noodles and Mooncake.

He came back to Malysia in 2015 and currently working in Pullman Kuching as a Dim Sum Chef.

When I first met him, to me he is a shy person but very approachable and funny. Expert in his field, he shared his knowledge to us and that is one of a good trait of a chef.

The making of Xiao Loong Bao

With apron and chef hats, all of us started with our first class which was making the Xiao Loong Bao.

The process of of making this bao looks easy seriously looks easy. But once we get our hands on them. IT WAS A MESSSSS! We giggled,we laughed and we tried our best to make our hand made bao look at least decent but naahh..maybe we need extensive class to do that LOL.

Hand Pulled Noodles

After the mess making bao,we had a little rest before moving to the next sesh which was the Hand Pulled Noodle. The process take a lot of “dancing movements”; and the reason why I said dancing movement so that the protein in the dough will be spread evenly.

To be honest,I really suck pulling the noodles so I gave up half way and just observed others. I did tasted the noodle in the end, although I didn’t manage to make it on my own.  We ate the “fruits of our labour” at the end of the class, I DO ATE ALOT OF THE BAO because it taste sooo good.

So that was it,my first hand on experience joining masterclass hosted by Pullman Miri Waterfront Hotel. Twas an awesome day for me, to get to know new people, learning new things that I thought I wouldn’t get to learn before this. Thank you so much to Pullman Miri Waterfront Hotel once again and hoping for a future collaboration.

How to join the masterclass?

Please call Ms Pira at 085-323 888 ext 8224

Price for the Masterclass: RM88nett.

Open for public.

Come one come all. Learn while you still can.

Till then,

XOXO

He is very specific(mind you im am searching high and low for the word) about his handcrafted Yee Sang, gave us the history and how Yee Sang is prepared. As usual, being curious,we asked him alot of questions regarding Yee Sang as the dish were very interesting and for sure every bits of it has its own meaning.

Yee Sang,a must have opening dish for Chinese New Year, colourful and beautifulThe list of dishes to be served during Prosperity & Fortune buffet dinner Well, lets go one by one of the dishes SHALL WE? Hahahaha i love food tasting. So here we go!

Chicken Consomme with Dry Scallop & Waterchestnut

1) Chicken Consomme with Dry Scallop & Waterchesnut

My first impression on this soup was,”wow, intersting” and my first sip of the soup,it brings me back to my childhood. My late mom’s soup tasted like this and I was so excited finishing it off. The crunchiness of waterchestnut, the soft n tender chicken n scallop,I WANT THE RECIPE PLEASE CHEF LOL

Braised Chicken with Supreme Chinese Herbs & Korean Ginseng

2) Braised Chicken with Supreme Chinese Herbs & Korean Ginseng

This Braised chicken is the BOMB! My second favourite dish and why I said this is my fav,the meat was so tender & soft, all the herbs perfectly in sync and the most important is,the ginseng doesnt overpower all of the ingredients.👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿

Two flavour prawn dish combination

3) Two flavor Prawn Dish Combination.

For me,this dish,I just can say its a normal everyday-I-can-get dish. Not much of a prawn fan but the presentation was not that bad at all.

Steamed Chinese Pomfret “Teow Chew” Style

4) Steamed Chinese Pomfret “Teow Chew” Style

I think this pomfret fish is chinese. (Dry joke im so sorry) Pomfret is always my favourite fish because of its’ tender and sweet meat. And in my household, pomfret is some kind of luxury fish due to its’ market price. Upon tasting this dish,i like how it presented, subtle taste and homey kind of feeling.

Stir Fried Assorted Vegetables with Cashew Nuts

5) Stir Fried Assorted Vegetables with Cashew Nuts

Ahhh vegetables…hahaha I am very picky when it comes to vegetables. In my opinion, this dish more to like homecook vege style. The cashew nuts gave the dish a nutty notes and the crunchiness of the noodles gave a lil bit of different ways to eat vege.

Steamed Rice in Lotus Leaf

6) Steamed Rice in Lotus Leaf

Since it was the last dish presented, I was full so I just take little rice on my plate. The taste was okay and very filling I should say

Chilled Sweetened Avocado & Mango Cream accompanied with Pamelo

7) Chilled Sweetened Avocado & Mango Cream accompanied with Pamelo

Dessert at last. Very fusion dessert I must say. The yin and yang touch are obvious as you can see in the picture. And hint of Pamelo beads in between. Too sweet though but for me it was very kind interesting dessert for everyone.

There you go readers! My personal review on special chinese new year dishes.

Why its hard to find a perfect guy.

I am sure you ladies have the hard time looking for that Mr Perfect. Here is some newsflash for you, they DONT EXIST.

I’m writing because I do struggle at this. Looking for someone, longing for a person to call my own. I do have few man-crush here and there. But thats it. It just stop there, Thats it. Its either that person cant handle my status as a single parent (yes, I am a single mom) Or I am just not into being in a serious relationship. Whatever, Im just being melodramatic.

Who doesn’t want to have a steady boyfriend? Who doesn’t,right? Am I picky? Yes I am. I am very selective in searching for a lifetime partner in crime. Some may ask, what kind/type of guy I am looking for?
My answer is simple; If he can accept me,for who I AM,then we are all set. If you are not ready for Judith ALushzka Tela, then move. I don’t need you. I am better off alone,to be honest.

Being in love and staying in love is just a huge deal for me. I don’t want someone to waste my time. I don’t have time for fuckboys or passerby lover.

I know God is currently working in my life, about who I am going to be with. I will let Him work His thing in me. I don’t have to worry because He KNOWS me better.

For now, I just gawk at Hot Korean actors.

Kbye.

My hair- Digitalized.

Good Morning friends!! Actually I am feeling rather sleepy and not feeling well. Before I lose my mojo, I better write something for you guys.

So last Saturday, I went to this awesome salon called, The Azores Hairwork & Academy for my digital perm sesh.

The day before,my friend (Parry)post up a facebook status that she is looking for a model for hair perming training. I just accidently volunteered because I am random and I do NEED something new. And its free (i am a cheapskate n broke,i know)

Fast forward, this salon is actually in Taman Tunku, not far from Miri Airport but from my house to reach here takes about 30 mins to an hour. SERIOUS.

Hairstylist of the day,Tommy

First things first, I was given hair consultation and how this digital perming works. That’s Tommy,my stylist of the day. My hair was really in SUPERBAD condition(i’m sorry hair) so the process will be tricky and need to be done carefully.

My hair was trimmed and was given a bit of layer

Mr Ivan,The Azores creative director
My hair ,touched by magical hands of Ivan 👸🏼

The creative director,Mr Ivan went through with me and gave his stylist some guidance along the way.

Getting all the necessary chemicals into my hair
hello tommy!
my love patiently waiting
getting ready to be “curled”
curly wurly time!
so this is how digital perm looks like. with all the wires

The process really took around 6 hours and we are all tired, lol. But to be honest, the atmosphere was really welcoming, I was given some coffee and sweets and my daughter was hogging on their sweets (😅🙄)

Every staff are all professional in their own way and their creative director are really resourceful and warm. This is my kind of salon surely.

photo by Ivan. Backview of my curly wurly
lol i looked more mature here💆🏼😱

I am truly grateful and satified with my hair and the hair services they given me. Kudos to The Azores Hairwork & Academy. I wish you all every success and may God bless you all.

Thanks to my friend, Parry for the opportunity.😘💕

So I cut my hair

Hello! Hello!

I am really not being in the mode of writing since I am so overwhelmed with so many things.

Work, life, social whatever are all in haywire lately and I am so tired of things

Instagram just copied Snapchat, Pokemon Go already in Malaysia and what else is new?

Last night, I just got the crazy mode on. I cut my hair. Ohh pfftt not that short though. Just shoulder length.

I am actually tired of my hair. (Roots are showing, hairfall & scalp problems) thanks to my excessive colourings and bleaching throughout this year.

I really do not know what my next step is because I am planning to further my studies but I am too broke for that. Nonetheless, I will figure things out (like I always do)

So many things I wanted to do in my life. I am going to do it one step at a time.
Sigh. And I need 6 million dollars.

Till then,

Warm Stone Massage by Mandara Spa Miri

Hello readers! How have you been?
Yesterday I went to Mandara Spa for my complimentary treatment I received for my write up. (FYI: if you remembered my previous post on Mandara 20th anniversary)

Pei Pei & Eileen

I was offered a Warm Stone Massage which I was so stoked to try out. 2 of my fellow bloggers, Eileen & Pei Pei were there as well for different complimentary treatments.
Cold ginger tea served in these cute cups and mini jugs

Before the treatment commenced, we were served a welcoming drink, cold ginger tea. It was so refreshing and a thirst quencher.

Before we started with our treatments, we were briefed about the type of massages we were going to experience by the Spa Manager, Ms Angeline and her Spa Therapist, Suci.

Suci (spa therapist) EXPLAINING THE MASSAGE OIL to Pei

For my Warm Stone massage, I was given the choice of Aromatherapy Massage oil which were Mandara Oil or Tranquility Oil. (I will talk about the oils in my next write up). I chose Tranquility Oil because it is good for stress & jet lag.
So the 3 of us went to our own villas and changed into sarongs.

I was asked to lay face down first and Suci began her opening massage which started from my feet. It’s actually beeen a while SINCE I had A massage so I was a bit ‘geli’ lol.

First, my legs were massaged with the aromatherapy oil that I chose. Suci’s hands are so firm and strong. Just what I needed: a firm & strong pressure. After being ‘oiled up’, 2 warm stones were placed at the soles of my feet. It was warm and relaxing.

The warm stones are not ordinary stones. They were specially flown from Bali, Indonesia and very costly.

The stones were warmed up in a big warmer and before being placed on skin, the therapist will glide the stone onto the skin and then place it on the pressure points on the body.
I felt so relaxed but at the same time not at peace because the mind was still thinking about soooo many petty things.

The massage was 50 minutes long. I wished I had it longer. Hahahha but WITH this Warm Stone massage, you can only go for 50 minutes. I bet no one can go further than that.
When my session was over, I was given a warm version of ginger tea which was OH SO GOOD like I needed IT so badly.

Suci & me after the treatment

It was a wonderful experience in Mandara; a true pure Balinese Touch. I am recommending you guys to splurge and pamper yourselves or you loved ones once in a while at Mandara Spa.

To those who still don’t have any idea where is Mandara Spa, it is located at Miri Marriott Resort & Spa, Jalan Tanjong Lobang Miri.
You can call and make a booking via phone at 085-421121
Or, if you want to check out what do they offer at the spa,

Hope to have more collaborations with them and I truly appreciate their hospitality.
